……………. ….Throw Back !!!
I was on a bus one certain time, traveling from Jos to Abuja, when a man who bought cashew nuts worth 5 thousand naira from a little boy, threw out only two thousand naira through the window just as the bus was about speeding off.Because I was sitting behind him and had seen the transaction I asked the man how much he gave the little boy.
“5k o, my brother. Chop cashew nut.” He stretched one towards me.
I refused to collect it.
I told him he gave the child 2k and I could see the boy standing and wondering.
“I gave him 5k. You no see well.”
I quickly raised an alarm. I told the driver to stop the car and pleaded with him to turn back so I could give the child his complete money.
Some people in the bus complained of the time and how far we had gone. Others agreed and felt we should go back and pay for the complete cashew nut.
The driver turned back and we drove to the spot.
While other children were on the road hustling and struggling to sell, this small boy was at a corner crying.
I understood him because half of his goods were gone. His money wasn’t complete. I stepped down from the bus and asked the boy how much was missing and how much he was given.
He confirmed that he was given just 2k and was short of 3k from his money.
I went back to the bus and asked the man to bring the balance or return his cashew to him. The man began to act like he didn’t know what was happening. He claimed he thought it was cheaper and didn’t know the price of the cashew he bought was 5k.
He returned the rest of the cashew to the boy and took the cashew for the worth of his money which was 2k.
I gave the boy an extra 2k to put a smile on his face.
The boy was very happy.
He got his goods back, and an extra change in his pocket for the stress we put him through.
As we were entering back into the bus, I saw the boy stand up cheerfully to begin his hustle again.
The young man refused to talk to me after that incident.
I had to explain to him as we journeyed.
“As a child, I hawked pure water and I knew how it felt to lose money and returning home to tell stories. If that boy’s cry reaches God because of what you made him go through today, you will face issues in life. Strange issues. You will begin wonder why you are making certain losses in life and business, but you won’t realize that it is because of cashew nut worth three thousand naira you stole from a child years ago that is affecting you.”
Every action towards someone has a consequence and a reward.
Be careful what you do to people.
