At plain sight, “The Writing Boy” looks like an old toy: a wooden doll with a porcelain head, barefoot, and with a goose feather in hand. However, inside this doll lies a technological marvel: 6,000 mobile pieces operate a writing mechanism that turns the “child” into the world’s first automatic calligrapher.

Developed in 20 months of hard work by Pierre Jacques Dro, “The Writing Boy” writes his first sentence: “My inventor is Jacques Dro.” The presentation in Paris in 1774 left King Louis XVI’s court speechless.
